Clay Class at Kehillath Israel Day Camp

On Marin Luther King Day I taught a fun clay class at Kehillath Israel Day Camp on how to make refrigerator magnets out of polymer clay.

Class theme was nature, in honor of Tu BiShvat. Tu BiShvat, a.k.a. ‘New Year of the Trees’ is a Jewish holiday; in modern Israel it is also celebrated as an ecological awareness day.

I think it was Kehillath Israel’s first attempt at a day camp. It took place in their new building in Brookline.

It was also my first attempt at working with such young kids. In fact, when the camp manager approached me about teaching a clay class at Kehillath Israel, it quickly became obvious that I did not have a class suitable for such young participants, since all the techniques I teach in my other classes require using a sharp blade. So, with the camp manager we discussed the options and came up with the idea for a new class.

We had a lot of fun with three very cheerful, very young participants. Curiosity peaked, creativity at its height, they managed to make three absolutely different refrigerator magnets. I had to help them with the oven, of course, but the rest is entirely their own work! I hope to see the girls again some day, when they’re older and can do more fun projects with me!
